The strong trade wind, which blows relentlessly in the area, has caused these trees to twist due to its force, creating truly peculiar and amazing shapes, even growing parallel to the ground surrendered to the power of the winds.Orchilla lighthouse and volcanic cone Located in the west of the island of El Hierro and easily accessible by car, the Orchilla lighthouse offers a natural location to contemplate the sky in front of the tranquility of the Atlantic Ocean in a place with little light pollution. In addition to its important astronomical value, the tour is also worthwhile in historical terms: in the 17th century this point was chosen as a reference point to establish the Zero Meridian, until it was relocated to the English town of Greenwich in 1885. You can also see the constellation of Taurus:In Orchilla, in the early hours of November nights, looking east, with the sea behind you and the lighthouse on your left, you can see a constellation that heralds the end of autumn. This is Taurus, with its characteristic head shape with long parallel horns. In this head, formed by a letter V of stars, one shines above the others. It is Aldebarán, an Arabic name that means 'the one that follows', in reference to the fact that it seems to follow the Pleiades star cluster on its journey through the sky. And this cluster looks like a tiny comet to the naked eye, but it shows up magnificently with binoculars or a wide-field telescope.volcanic cove of Tacorón This pearl, called Tacorón, is very accessible. The road that leads to the southern tip of El Hierro turns to the right shortly before its destination: the coastal town of La Restinga. A short path goes to these natural pools, which are worth visiting. Here you can enjoy a calm sea in the middle of the Atlantic all year round. An unforgettable place to enjoy the sunset. For a reason, this part of the ocean is called Mar de las Calmas. An unforgettable enclave in which the palette of navy blues mixes with volcanic black.Hoya del Morcillo La Hoya del Morcillo is a recreational area with a soccer field, picnic areas, barbecues, playgrounds and public bathrooms. The forest closes over this area to provide shade and shelter for visitors who want to enjoy a picnic. Commanding the rest of the trees are these two giants, and for that, a few meters from the Old Man is the Pino Gordo. Under the immensity of this pine – more than 35 meters high, and a wide trunk that at a given moment splits to continue growing with its tentacles almost as wide as high – four almost tiny wooden tables can be seen with its benches that invite you to sit under this monster to eat quietly.Circular path of the Llanía The La Llanía path is a gift for the senses that exhibits the greener side of the island thanks to a very well signposted circular route of little difficulty -suitable for children and adults- that surrounds you in a wonderful orchard of laurel forests, heather and canary pines.As for the duration, the route has three variants: short, medium and long; identified with the colors green, orange and blue, respectively.Green: 4,200 meters with an approximate duration of 2 hoursOrange: 5,600 meters with an approximate duration of 3 hoursGreen: 7,400 meters with an approximate duration of 4 hoursAfter crossing under a beautiful wooden arch that marks the beginning of the route, you will enter El Brezal, an authentic fairytale green setting full of magnetism that is especially bewitching when the usual El Hierro mists come down to say hello.In it you will find beautiful examples of bayal-brezal partially dressed by whimsical mosses and lichens, dense carpets of ferns covering the ground, large open areas decorated -in spring- with striking yellow and purple flowers, vertiginous repopulated slopes belonging to the Caldera de La Hoya de Fireba, a pine forest, several surprises and even a legend as the final prize in the area known as El bailadero de las brujas.There are several strategic stops on the La Llanía hiking route but, without a doubt, the most interesting and the ones that arouse the greatest expectation are its two viewpoints (both included in the three variants): The Fireba viewpoint, with brutal views from the caldera of the same name; and the La Llanía viewpoint, with vertiginous and spectacular views of the El Golfo valley.Pine Piloto The Burnt Hearted PilotYou have to resort to the trails of the network of Natural Paths of the island to reach another famous El Hierro pine: the Pilot Pine. In the direction of Pista Montaña Mercadel at one of the exits of the road that leads from El Golfo to La Hoya del Morcillo. In any case, you must visit this tree that proudly resists despite the fact that its trunk suffers from a huge burned hole. An excursion to the Pico de Malpaso will allow you to see and feel the island like you never imagined. With an altitude of 1,502 m, located between the municipalities of El Pinar and Frontera, it is the highest point on El Hierro. If you decide to ascend to the top very early in the morning, you will have the opportunity to see how nature wakes up as the sun rises. A show worth living.La Restinga beach and fisherman port. The fishing village of La Restinga, located in the south of El Hierro, is the southernmost point in all of Spain. The tranquility that is breathed in its streets and coves and the richness of its seabed are the main attractions of this small town, perfect for those seeking sun and beach tourism but far from the large crowds. In addition, its beach is perfect for the whole family, since it is protected from the waves by the breakwater of the port.Diving fans can go to any of the diving clubs to discover the Mar de las Calmas, one of the best diving areas in the Canary Islands. There is also a small museum dedicated to the submarine volcanic eruption that took place in 2011 about three kilometers from the coast of La Restinga.Finally, a volcanic path starts, where you can see the markings in the sea of the calms of the marine reserve, and an old lime kiln.The sacred tree, tree of Garoe. The sacred tree of El HierroThe Garoé tree is found in a place full of magnetism, in the town of San Andrés in El Hierro. Adored by the bimbaches (former inhabitants of the island of El Hierro), it is today a symbol of island identity. The leaves of this til were capable of collecting enough water to supply the entire El Hierro population, which made it become a sacred tree. In the 17th century a hurricane knocked it down and it was not until 1949 when it was replaced by the current one.Get to know the interpretation center and the Water RouteThis place, a source of legends, today has a small interpretation center where you can find all the information related to the sacred tree, from its historical and archaeological importance to the phenomenon of horizontal rain, responsible for the Garoé tree distilling water.
